Tile-by-tile color work
Learn how to lay mosaic tiles, prepare grout, apply it cleanly, and finish the surface.
You will learn the following:
Mosaic kits are a creative way to build art one tile at a time. Each kit follows the same basic process, and the design changes with the pattern you choose.
The wooden backing board includes a guide to help place each tile accurately. Work from left to right and top to bottom so the design stays organized.
The kit uses glue, tweezers, grout, a container, and wooden tools for placing, filling, wiping, and cleaning the finished mosaic.
The only difference between mosaic kits is the design you choose. Follow the same steps and you will have your own finished piece in no time.

Setup
First, you'll be gluing tiles onto a wooden backing board that comes with your kit. This board has a guide to help you place each tile accurately.
Step 1
Start at the top left corner of the board and move from left to right, then top to bottom. See figure 1 for reference.
Step 2
Use the glue that's included in your kit. Just a single drop is enough for each tile. Check out figure 2 to see how it's done. Be careful not to use too much; otherwise, the tile might move around before it can dry.
Step 3
To place the tiles, use the tweezers that come with your kit. See figure 3 for guidance. Align each tile within the board's guides, then press down firmly with your finger. Hold it for a couple of seconds to make sure it stays in place.
Step 4
After all tiles are placed, let the project dry for at least 2 hours before applying grout.
Preparation
Your next task is to prepare the grout. Aim for a consistency similar to brownie batter (3 parts grout to 1 part water).
Avoid inhaling the grout powder. It's safest to mix it while wearing a mask.
Technique
Apply grout over the tile surface, clean the tile faces and edges, then let the mosaic harden fully.

Step 1
Put on gloves and then use the wooden paddle to evenly spread the grout over your mosaic's surface.

Step 2
Ensure that you press the grout into the spaces between the tiles and also along the outer edges of the wooden backing board.

Step 3
Use the wooden paddle to remove any extra grout from the top of the mosaic. For the sides, use the coffee stirrer to scrape off as much grout as you can. Once you're done, let it dry for 15 minutes.

Step 4
Once it's been drying for 15 minutes, take a paper towel and gently wipe the surface of each tile to remove any remaining grout.

Step 5
Aim to wipe off as much grout from the tile surfaces as possible, but be careful not to disturb the grout lines between the tiles.
Step 6
For the edges and corners of the wooden backing board, use a coffee stirrer to scrape away any excess grout.
Step 7
After you've cleaned up your mosaic, let it sit for 24 hours to completely harden before you proceed to the next step.
Final Step
Now that the grout has set for 24 hours, it's time for the final cleanup.

Step 1
Take a paper towel and gently buff the surface of each tile to bring out its natural shine.

Step 2
Use your remaining coffee stirrer to scrape away any excess grout along the edges and corners of the wooden backing board. The edge of the stirrer works well for sanding off extra grout.
Step 3
For the finishing touch, use a paper towel to wipe around the mosaic's edges and give the tiles one last buff.
Step 4
Once everything looks clean, go ahead and remove the protective tape from the back.
Tip
Avoid inhaling grout powder. Mix it while wearing a mask, and make sure the tiles are fully dry before grouting.
